As promised, I’m going to talk about the little old ladies we learned about yesterday at la Plaza de Mayo. These women are known to wear white handkerchiefs around their heads that are embroidered with their children’s names, birthdays, & the dates they disappeared or were assumed to have died. When we first showed up, there were only a few of these women in sight under a covered stand selling flags, pins, books, & other things in support of their cause.
When they started marching, the women were in two groups. One was larger, & Pamela explained to us that they always have some sort of political agenda that changes up every month or so.
The other group was smaller & quieter. They each held up a poster board with the name & face of the son or daughter they had lost.
Pamela suggested that we take a walk around with them to see how it might feel to march around the plaza once a week for over 30 years for the same cause. It may have lasted less than five minutes, but it was enough to understand how dedicated these people are & to feel even a fraction of the pain & loss that they’ve experienced.
Afterwards we walked towards the national cathedral where the President is sworn in & where José de San Martin is buried.
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, we walked a few more blocks to the infamous Café Tortoni for some delicious coffee drinks full of dulce de leche, milkshakes, & the signature churros with chocolate. Can’t get much better than that!
We suggest you all take a page from the porteño way of life & take a couple hours to chill in a café with people you like & discuss important worldly topics. It will make everyone feel better.

Do they tell you how many calories are in there or
at least how many miles to run to burn it all off ??

Thanks for the great photos and info, Alexa. I’m enjoying your journey. Speaking of things going on in the world, please check out the situation in Wisconsin. The newly elected governor is trying to eliminate collective bargaining for public employees (or limit it only to wages). Schools here were closed the last 3 days while crowds of 40,000 or more gathered around the capitol. Meanwhile, the 14 democratic senators fled to llinois to prevent a quorum and passage of Walker’s budget repair bill. Many students have been protesting as well, getting an education about peaceful protest and the whole issue of organized labor and unions. Schools may open again on Tuesday, and disciplinary action may be taken against those absent for the protests. These are hard times, but these measures seem too desperate and heavy handed (the Governor). He forgets that democracy is of the people, by the people and for the people.
