Grand Theft Ateneo

It started out like any other rainy afternoon. We were riding the slightly crowded subway on our way to El Ateneo Grand Splendid, a fabulous theatre-turned-bookstore. Alexa was standing near the doors of the subway, and Maddy and I were sitting across from her. A teenage boy came over and stood near Alexa, like he was going to get off at the next stop. After he stood there for a second, I could see his hand reach to her purse and unbutton the outside pocket. I immediately got Alexa’s attention, but the kid’s accomplice moved so he was blocking my view. After that, Alexa realized what was happening and the kid immediately moved away and acted like nothing happened. Luckily this kid wasn’t able to steal anything (the most he would have gotten was some receipts and napkins) but Maddy and I would have intervened if he did get into the purse.

We have heard of many thefts in the area, some happening to people who live in our house, but it is definitely an eye-opening experience when you see it in action. Needless to say, we will be clutching our purses closer to our bodies from now on.

On a happier note, here are some pictures of El Ateneo Grand Splendid!

  1. Wow, I’m glad that didn’t happen. Perhaps it was a good consciousness raiser. Stay vigilant, ladies, and stay together.
